81 – Free Climbing in Sperlonga and Gaeta, South Lazio

We recently welcomed our first Free Climbing visitors, a group of young people from Czechoslovakia.  It was a real pleasure to have them stay with us here at “Tre Cancelle”.

The rocky coastline and formidable limestone cliffs near Sperlonga / Gaeta are indeed a paradise for Free Climbers from all around the world.

In the Sperlonga area of South Lazio there are several breath-taking rock faces such as the “Sperlonga Classica” and the “Muro Bianco”.

Also there is a stretch of beach known as “La Spiaggia Dell’Arenauta”, which is said to be the most beautiful in this region, wild and natural. This is because it is only accessible on foot, down a very long series of steps known as the “Tre Centro Scalini”.

Here towering cliffs with rocky crags and challenging overhangs, rise straight from the beach of fine white sand and crystal clear waters.

There are more challenging climbs inside the cave known as “La Grotta Dell’Arenauta”, which are graded according to levels of technical ability. Here it is possible to climb whatever the season or the weather.

  1. Cara Signora Louise Shapcott, dear Louise Shapcott,
I sent an urgent message to the mail adress ph.shapcott@tinternet.com and am waiting for an answer. I ask you whether I can use two of your pictures for an on-line-petition in favour of the beach Arenauta. (For more information please look at the copy of my mail and thee text of the petition below). Please let me know as soon as you can.

For other people: please let me know if you are interested in signing the petition you find below. I will contact you as soon as we will be ready with the preparation.

    Martine Nida-Rümelin

    Cara Signora, caro Signore,

    English Version:
certainly you heard about the danger for the beach Arenauta. I like that beach very much and come back to it with my family since 13 years (to meet friends and to climb in the beach). I am preparing an online petition in favor of the beach and I would like to add a few pictures. I have many pictures of the beach but, unfortunately they are not accessible to me right now (they are in Switzerland were I live normally during the year, but I am in Munich right now, in the town where I come from).
I found your very beautiful pictures of the beach in your blog “Tre cancelle” and I would like to ask you: can I use two of them for the petition (dsci 2341/ dsci 22882)? In case you allow me to do so, would you prefer that I put the name of the photographer or would you rather like me not to put it?

I would be very pleased about a rapid answer from your part.
    Greetings from Munich
    Martine (Nida-Rümelin)

Text of the petition in Italian and English:

Petition initiated by Martine Nida-Rümelin, professor for philosophy at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, member of the Swiss Alpine Club, member of the German Alpine Club

International petition of climbers in favour of the beach Arenauta ( Gaeta, Italy)

We, European climbers and climbers from all over the world are alarmed by the news spread through various channels that the marvellous beach Arenauta, presently closed to the public, might be in danger. We would like to address you, the authorities of Gaeta, in order to ask you to make all possible efforts to save this wonderful beach and its surrounding rocks. Please do act in a way which guarantees

    – that the natural beauty of the beach Arenauta and its present morphology will be preserved

    – that this marvellous climbing place remains open for climbers and the climbing routes will not be destroyed but rather renovated to enhance safety

    – that the beach remains a free beach accessible to the public for a modest prize

    – that the beach will not be closed in the evening for those who wish to enjoy its beauty

    – that no additional constructions will be allowed.

We address this petition to you, the authorities of Gaeta, as people who appreciate a lot this extraordinary place. Many of us have spent unforgettable moments on that very special beach and hope to come back in the future. We know that the beach Arenauta is one of the very rare places in the whole world where climbing can be combined with enjoying sea and sun in a wonderful natural setting. Gaeta is known among climbers in the whole world for that reason. We hope that the present concern about the possibility of falling rocks in some parts of the beach will not provoke an overreaction and that the beach will be reopened to the public in the near future. All measures that will be taken to enhance safety should be done in a way which protects as much as possible the morphology of the rocks, in full awareness of the value of these rocks and with great respect for their natural beauty.
