229 – Florisa’s Garden

My wonderful Italian friend Florisa is always busy, whether it be cooking, cleaning, working, harvesting olives or helping people, friends and family. She has such a very kind and generous nature.

However the thing that she loves the most is her garden. She really does have green fingers, or as they call it here in Italy “pollice verdi” which curiously translates as “green thumbs”. She really does knows how to make her garden grow. It is a delight to wander through it.

This will be just a photo blog, as I believe the pictures will speak for themselves.

210 – Itri 2015 Festa della Madonna di Civita

We are delighted to have our friends, the White family and three of their girls, staying with us once again at Tre Cancelle. You may remember that Niamh had already spent a month here in June with her elder sister Shannon.  One evening we decided to trundle down to Itri to check out this year’s summer festival.

Here are the girls heading down the old Roman Via Appia towards the main square of Piazza Incoronazione.

On almost every available piece of pavement there were African peddlers, who could not afford to rent a stall, so they simply displayed their wares on a sheet stretched out on the ground.

I took a peek inside La Chiesa dell’ Annunziata.

185 – Itri’s Medieval Festival

itri medieval festival

During the summer months the population of Itri swells with holiday visitors and as families that emigrated abroad return to their beloved home town.  Many come to attend Itri’s July festival which is held in honour of its patron, “La Madonna della Cività”.

Itri Castle in Latina South Lazio Italy

The festival always culminates in a splendid firework display which emanates from the magnificent castle that dominates the old medieval quarter.

During July and August Itri holds a whole host of events and this year we ventured to see the “Festa Medievale” which was also held up in the old historic part of town.  We arrived early, however the streets were already jammed with cars heading for the festival, and parking spaces were at a premium.  So we decided to park in the lower part of town and continue by making our way on foot.

The old town is a warren of narrow cobble stone streets, archways, gates and stairways.  It is full of interesting nooks and crannies, there is something of interest around every corner.

181 – Giada’s First Communion Day

First Communion Itri Italy

In June we were invited by our friends Davide and Nandi to attend their daughter’s First Communion ceremony.

We arrived to find the church full to the brim and the service had already got underway.

We soon spotted Giada looking very beautiful.

Here, in Italy, all children wear the same outfit – so there is no competition as to who has the prettiest dress, which I think is a very sensible solution.

180 – Artichoke Festival in Sezze April 2014

Artichoke Festival Sezze Latina Italy

It was a perfect Spring day and this was to be our first visit to the historic town of Sezze.   We could see, as we approached, that it was perched high on a hill overlooking the Pontine Plain.

View of Sezze from the Pontine Plain

View of Sezze from the Pontine Plain

We could just make out a queue of slow moving cars making their tortuous way up the steep and winding hill. Clearly this was going to be a popular event. Finding a parking place was very difficult because the town, which was larger than I had imagined, was already thronged with visitors from far and wide. In the end we had to park a little out of town and make our way back to the centre on foot.

April is the season when the artichoke is in its prime, and in Sezze this vegetable has become the symbol of the cultural and culinary heritage of the area. This was the 45th edition of this gastronomic event, Sezze’s Artichoke Festival or Sagra del Carciofo.

Sagra del Carcioffo Sezze Latina South Lazio Italy

The artichoke, is in fact, a member of the thistle family, and it’s the large compact flower bud that is for eating – they are high in fibre and iron and interestingly are also said to possess aphrodisiac properties.

In these parts it is the non prickly “Romanesco” variety of artichoke that is grown, which produces beautiful purple tinted heads.

Artichoke Festival in Sezze Latina South Lazio Italy

They thrive in the local micro-climate of the Pontine Plain where they are sheltered from cold winters and warmed by balmy sea breezes. The plain was originally just swamp land where people were plagued by Malaria.  However, during the 1930’s, Mussolini organised thousands of workers from the north of Italy to construct networks of dikes and canals to drain the land and transform the swamps into fertile agricultural land.  Today the local economy remains largely based on agriculture.

As we neared the bustling centre of the town we began to see stall after stall of proud farmers exhibiting and promoting their wonderful seasonal produce.

Some had created floral arrangements with the artichokes.

Makeshift camp kitchens and tented dining areas had been erected serving meals of several courses all based on artichokes, prepared and cooked in so many different culinary ways, such as raw, pickled, marinated, fried in batter, braised, fricasseed, barbecued, alone or in sauces and stews.  There is even an artichoke liqueur called “Cynar”.

The streets were full of music and dancers in colourful traditional costumes.

I would have liked to have further explored the old Medieval quarters of Sezze and taken more photos, but the town was absolutely thronged with visitors that day.

178 – Pietro’s Farm

Goats in Itri Latina South Lazio Italy

You may recall that last year our friend Pietro brought some of his horses to graze on our land at Tre Cancelle, to help keep the grass short in the olive groves.  Pietro has about 12 horses in all and has a small farm surrounded by the Aurunci mountains where he also keeps a herd of goats,  some chickens and sometimes a pig.

We have taken to visiting him often as we are keen to learn about keeping livestock.

Pietro’s two teenage boys are amazing, they willingly help him with the daily chores on the farm, they are so hard working.

Matteo

Each afternoon after school the boys, Mirko and Matteo, take the herd of goats out for a long walk so they can graze freely along the hedgerows.

One of our first visits was in January, while Emma and Aneurin were still here.

Aneurin was totally fearless amongst the goats.

Goat Farm in Itri Italy

I, however, was a little more hesitant as I can recall visiting a farm zoo as a child, and becoming most upset when one of the goats started to eat the buttons off my coat !!!

However, slowly I am becoming braver. Each one has a different character, apparently some have horns and some do not.  They are very inquisitive, but they don’t really want to do you any harm.

Goat Farm in Itri Latina Italy

We were surprised to see that a young puppy was living with the goats in the barn.  He is a beautiful Maremma sheepdog, an ancient breed used for guarding flocks of sheep or goats.  As the dog grows up with the goats a strong bond develops and they become very loyal to the flock and will protect them against danger.

Pietro told us that before long the pregnant goats would be giving birth.  We returned a week or two  later to see some of the babies.

When we arrived many of the mother goats were out on their constitutional walk so the babies were left bleating in the barn on their own.  They were so cute !!!

This mother had only given birth a few hours earlier.

Newly Born Baby Goats in Itri Italy

Soon we could hear the clanking of  bells signalling the return of the flock and the babies bleated eagerly awaiting their mothers.

At first there seemed to be great confusion but we soon realised that the boys had already learned who belonged to who and deftly began pairing up each mother with its offspring, latching them on to their mothers’ teets.  The boys then helped put fresh hay into the racks for the adult goats to eat.

We returned a few weeks later, and my how the babies had grown !!!

They skittishly ran back and forth from one end of the barn to the other.

Now they were no longer totally dependent on their mothers’ milk.  Pietro said he would soon think of making some fresh Marzolino goats cheese.

Here are some of Pietro’s cockerels and chickens.

Hopefully before too long we will get around to getting some chickens of our own !!!

During January and February we were delighted to have Emma and Aneurin once again to stay here at Tre Cancelle.

171 – A Busy Busy November

At the beginning of November our friends  Kay and Elsie arrived from Wales, they regularly come to help us out at this time of year, which is normally the beginning of the olive harvest.

P1160269aa

Firstly we celebrated Elsie’s birthday with our friends at the Bellavista Restaurant in Itri

602844_10151966589790211_636745621_n

Pietro had previously discussed with us the possibility of bring two more horses to graze at Tre Cancelle, in particular those which had been born earlier this year and were now ready to be separated from their mothers.  After a day or so’s warning Pietro arrived with horse-box in tow and the two new members of the Tre Cancelle “Neigh-Gang” !!!  Pino was well intrigued !!!

1456015_10151772307143155_635672640_n

The new arrivals were somewhat shaken up by their long bumpy ride and needed a great deal of coaxing to get them to come out of the horse-box.

1425602_10151772307848155_1201359040_n

The first to emerge was black in colour – a young female, who we have named “Lola”.

The second was a tan coloured young male, who we have named “Vinci”.

Gradually they were introduced to Pino.

1235518_10151772307423155_1989699111_na

Aww Bless !!! They seemed to be missing their mothers so much and it gave the impression that they were trying to cuddle each other.

1001270_10151772311073155_736158279_na

Pino soon told them who was boss but after a few days they seemed to have settled down.   I think he enjoys the company.

A few days later  Emma and Aneurin, our youngest grandson, arrived also.  Emma was also champing at the bit to get back to work in the olive groves.

P1260316a

Our American friends Patrick and Mindy, and along with Mindy’s Mum Donna, came over one day with her mother to help with some olive picking, however as I mentioned previously this year the harvest was not good, but we worked together to gather what olives there were by hand.

P1260320aa

P1260324aa

P1260326aa

Paul and Patrick being tall were good at reaching the high ones.

Of course Aneurin helped too.

P1260306a

We were able to take advantage of the mild sunny weather by eating lunch together on the terrace. Not bad for November.

P1260300a

P1260303a

P1260304a

Many of our trees still need pruning to keep them from getting too tall and leggy and thus less productive.  Our dear friends Clive and Marilyn, Brits who currently live in Gaeta,  regularly come to help Paul with pruning duties. Clive is especially enthusiastic about our special Extra Virgin olive Oil.

P1160670a

P1160711rb

Regrettably, last spring whilst pruning trees Clive lost his footing on a ladder and had a nasty tumble, falling awkwardly.  Sadly he managed to break both his ankle and shoulder, which incapacitated him for several months.  Needless to say, we felt dreadful about the accident.  It just goes to show how easily accidents can happen, and the importance of tying the ladder to the tree.  Thankfully because he is such a fit and strong individual he seems to have made a good and swift recovery.  This Autumn Clive was keen to get back to work in the groves, Marilyn however has now banned him from climbing ladders, but he is still eager to do all he can at ground level.

Clive brought Marilyn and old friend from the UK knick-named “Smiffy” to work up at Tre Cancelle for a couple of days – Everyone worked so hard – pruning, chomping out and cutting to size logs, and burning the debris.    Once again here in Bella Italia we could enjoy sitting outside for lunch.

P1260383a

P1260384

A “Big Thank You” to every one who has so kindly given us their time, energy and enthusiam to help us progress on the upkeep and maintenance of the olive groves at Tre Cancelle. xxxxxxxx

Kay and Elsie’s holiday unfortunately soon came to end, however Emma and Aneurin were staying on for a couple more weeks.

We spent a day helping our neighbour Luca and his Mum to gather his olives, he did have a few more to harvest than us.

P1260429arb

P1260428arb

And of course Aneurin helped too  !!! – By turning his jacket around back-to-front and using his hood to put olives into !!!

How lovely it is to have a like-minded neighbour who prefers to use natural methods of cultivation rather than the often over use of  chemical agricultural products. Well done Luca, we wish you well in your endeavours !!!

170 – More Young and Keen Volunteers

Disappointingly Autumn this year there were very few olives.  It was not just us, but many of the local olive farmers found themselves in a similar situation.  Back in May, when the olive trees were in flower, there was a cold spell with strong wind and heavy rain, so because of this the olive flowers had not set to form their miniature little olives.

Yet there is always work to be done in the groves.  This Autumn we welcomed three more young keen volunteers to help out, Kirsten, Kay’s daughter, and two of her good friends Kyle and Jessica.  They had wanted to help with the olive harvest, but Paul soon got them to work pruning around the bases of the trees where unwanted shoots grow and making bonfires  with the debris.

Kyle took many photos of their stay.  I think they had fun !!!

I will let his photos do the talking ….
